The Own Your Media Club Handbook

Own your media. Then go outside.

Offline projects · Twin Cities, MN

A letter typed on BC's typewriter: Homemade tools that work on iPhone and Android, for people who would rather own their music, movies, and books than rent them from tech companies. Plus a short list of local places where the good stuff still happens in person. Own Your Media Club grew out of a few years of chasing one feeling: the good one you get with friends around a table, phones forgotten. Pull up a chair. You're in. Signed, BC.

§2 Places worth the trip

The best features are in person. Twin Cities places that make room for analog hobbies, real conversation and nights without a screen. Go say hi, and if you know a place that belongs here, tell BC next time you see him.

Present Company

Milton Square · St. Paul Let's be here together.

An analog lifestyle shop with phone-free events: fewer screens, more repair, and real time with people of every generation.

BC's take: A hidden gem in St. Anthony Park for anyone who's lost an evening to doomscrolling. Dig through vinyl, CDs and tapes, plus the boomboxes and Walkmans to play them. Tell Mick we sent ya. Visit Present Company →

Agharta Records

University Ave · St. Paul

New and collectible vinyl: rock, punk and metal, jazz, funk and soul, electronic, and a local bin worth digging through.

BC's take: The best vinyl shop in St. Paul, hands down. We've been many times and always find something amazing at a decent price. Visit Agharta Records →

Inkwell Booksellers

E Hennepin Ave · Minneapolis

An independent bookshop with a café and a cozy reading nook. Grab a book and a pastry, then settle in for a while.

BC's take: Worth checking out. It's a short walk from a bunch of great Northeast Minneapolis restaurants, so make a night of it. Visit Inkwell Booksellers →

myStereo

Music · iPhone & Android

Your own Plex music library on a stereo-style player with a real turn-and-press knob. No Plex? No problem. It also plays music stored right on your device. Cases, ratings, games and a few secrets.

Like to tinker? myStereo Elite adds extras like playing music from your own network share.

Flipside

Mixtapes · Powered by myStereo

Make someone a mixtape. A C60 or a C90, Side A and Side B, a handwritten label, played on a cassette deck that’s all buttons, and sent to a friend.

myShelf

Shelf tracker · Phone & computer

A catalog for the physical stuff: records, tapes, discs and books. Retro video-store looks, with a fast bulk-entry mode for big shelves.

Founder’s note: BC’s own copy is still called the Book of Rao, the holiest text of the planet Krypton.

Digital detox tools we're trying

Some are apps, some are things you can hold. Three we're testing right now to help put the phone down.

§4 What the club is less screen, more company

    §5 Gatherings phones in pockets

§6 It started around a table

Own Your Media Club grew out of a few years of chasing one feeling: the good one you get with friends around a table, phones forgotten. Here's how we got here.

    2023

    Runaway Anchor

It started with cocktails and mocktails. A few friends and I began mixing drinks, writing menus and hosting nights together. The drinks were good, but the real draw was the room: people talking, laughing and staying late.

    Then

    Letters from BC Gordon

Next came the writing. Letters from BC Gordon on Substack, often drafted on a manual typewriter, about friendship, family and the quiet costs of living on our screens.

    2026

    The dumb experiment

For 60 days I swapped my iPhone for a flip phone from dumb.co and wrote about it every week. The smartphone still lives in a yellow box most of the day. I got my evenings back, and I noticed how much of my music, movies and books I was renting instead of owning.

    Now

    Own Your Media Club

So I started building small tools that keep my media mine, like myStereo and myShelf, and keeping a list of local places worth putting the phone down for. Records, typewriters, paper books and face-to-face conversation. That’s the club.

    §7 Club rules

    1. Own what you love.

Keep the records, the files, the shelf. Nobody can take back what you own.

    2. Free, with no ads.

These are made for fun and for friends. Nothing here is trying to keep you scrolling.

    3. Then put it down.

Play the album, log the shelf, then go find your people.
